How you can help New Contrast

You may not know this but your subscription only covers about a quarter of the real costs.  If we had more subscribers, the unit cost would go down and we would need less funding.

Three quarters of the costs has to be made up with funding from somewhere.

Steven Watson, who was our main funding provider through UCT's Creative Writing School, died earlier this year.  His demise ended the grants covering the shortfall. If it wasn't for a very generous benefactor who saved us, we would be in the 'mud'.

To cover at least a third of the real costs, the price of future subs are R350 (local), R475 (SADC) and R600 for International or Rest of the World (ROW).

Cutting down the number of pages will have little cost reduction effect, the real need is to get more subs to reduce the cost per copy.

If we had enough subscribers it would make us independent.

You can help us by buying gift subs for friends for christmas, birthdays, and other festivals where giving gifts is the norm. Donations are always welcome.

See below for other ways you can assist us either to get more subscribers, or in other ways:

Here’s how you can help us:

  • If you know of anyone interested in literature; if you would send them an e-mail telling them about new Contrast and asking them to subscribe.  If you do not wish to send them, we can do it on your behalf, even anonymously, in which case you need only send us their e-mails. Contact us for a template letter to send to prospects.
  • If you are part of an organization, could you ask them to send a note to their members in the next Newsletter.  If you have a library in the organization, get them to order a subscription.
  • If you know of an organization interested in the arts that have a bit of budget left over, any amount will help us greatly.  A corporate subscription would also help (where they put issues in each reception area and in the library if they have one).
  • Advertising in the journal also brings in revenue.  In the latter 2 cases, they will be getting greater value for their money.  Any donation, sponsorship, and funding will get mention on the website and in the journal.
  • If you know of a retired, or other, chartered accountant that will do our books (computerized) pro-bono or deferred, we would be most grateful as we cannot ask for funding without audited books.
  • If you have a friend’s birthday coming up, please give a gift subscription, or send them a 50th birthday copy of New Contrast (a bit of Africana). We will send it directly to them if you include their contact details and address, with a note or message that it's from you.
  • Sponsor a school, college, or university to receive a free copy, or subscription, of new contrast.
  • Buy a copy for your local library as an example (hopefully they will subscribe if they see it).
  • Link to our website www.newcontrast.net from your website
  • Get people to send in literary contributions so that we can get more contributors (contributors now have to be subscribers to get their work published).
  • Talk about New Contrast on your Blog or on Social Media sites like Twitter, Facebook, Myspace, etc. with a link to the website.
  • Sponsor a Correctional Facility subscription and reach a marginalized group of people.  These Correctional Facilities consider creative writing a method of rehabilitation.
  • We are sitting on plastic garden chairs.  A donation of decent typist chairs will be a great help to our backs.
  • See our projects page
