Financial Crisis
Each copy of New Contrast is subsidised and has been the past 50 years. It is subsidised by the time of the editor, administrator and directors. It is subsidised financially by gifts; mostly by the raising of funds from institutions. Of the institutions, the University of Cape Town has stood out as benefactor. The extent of subsidy is significant: a copy costs approximately four times the revenue of its subscription. In other words, subscribers effectively pay for only one of the quarterly issues.
Our fundraiser extraordinaire was Stephen Watson. Stephen had access to funds through Creative Writing at UCT that are no longer available. Those funds amounted to about R100,000 per year. Stephen's sudden and tragic demise has precipitated the crisis; we need about R70,000 to make up the shortfall this year. Prospects for next year are brighter: we are talking subsidy to all the major universities in the Western Cape. So far our overtures have met with positive responses.
We believe New Contrast is part of the literary fabric of this country. We are not going to close, but we do need your understanding at a minimum. Better still, you can help.
If you, dear friend of literature, bought one paper subscription or two e-subscriptions as gifts, we would get through this year. You can buy online here. You can also contact us by email if you prefer to contribute by EFT.
Thank you for your support over these many years!
